Lorna Doone A Romance of Exmoor Books

Blackmore's *Lorna Doone: a Romance of Exmoor* is one of the true classics of English literature, a work that anyone interested in virtually any aspect of the traditions of English life, culture history and English literature's traditions must read. I read it relatively late in life, past my mid seventies and found the novel to fill in gaps in my knowledge and understanding of English history and life that I did not even know were there. However, my primary reason for giving the novel a five star rating has to do with the pure pleasure of the experience of becoming involved with the characters and immersed in their lives. Each character receives full development and one cannot but feel passionately toward them. No individual is more steadfast than John Ridd; no woman more beautiful of figure and soul than Lorna Doone; no woman more noble and tragic than Ruth Huckelback; no person more relentlessly evil than Carver Doone; and so on. But for me, the most entrancing passages of the novel are the lyric paeans to nature and country life, worthy in my opinion of the greatest of lyric poets.
*Lorna Doone* is a v_e_r_y long novel. One can almost imagine that Blackmore published it as a magazine serial, but he did not; indeed, he had difficulty getting it published the first time. On the other hand, one can also imagine, a family having the book in its possession, the members would, after dinner, gather round to read and listen to it communally, as families now gather to watch telenovelas or soap operas, for which this novel might serve as model. The twists and turns of plot continue through the final chapter, and at almost every stopping point, one is left hanging. Besides being master of the variety of dialects spoken at the time in England, Blackmore in this novel is also fiendish in his ability to write chapter concluding sentences that both transition to the next chapter and leave one breathlessly suspended.

Of course, this novel is in the public domain. The copy whose cover accompanies these remarks is both totally generic (cheap) and completely adequate.

Lorna Doone A Romance of Exmoor Books Reviews

A great classic story, somewhat below Pride and Prejudice, I suppose. If you have not read this, you are really missing part of reading history. A great book for leaving every day chores and obligations, as well as an introduction to history of the time. The background "revolution" is the challenge to James II, brother of King Charles II, who was the legitimate heir to the throne. That doesn't matter. Characters are well drawn, it's romantic and marvelous and I recommend .t. I've read it at least four times.
Had never read this book before and was only sketchy on what the story was about. John Riddell, a farmer lives in an area terrorised by the Doone family / tribe but he falls in love with Lorna Doone. Though this is a love story there's so much more, John's life as a farmer, his family and their stories, his cousin the outlaw, politics of the time, plots against the king etc. John has quite a dry wit at times. Some beautiful descriptions of nature though I did find the story slow to start.
Lorna Doone is a classic that deserves five stars because of its beauty - beauty of characterization, beauty of depiction of an era, beauty of description of love of place. There are few narrators that are more lovable than John Ridd, the protagonist of this great romance and adventure. Not only is he lovable, he is entirely admirable - an increasingly rare portrait of a man of deep integrity, capacity for love and aversion to violence. Its a version of masculinity that puts modern-day versions to shame. Similarly Lorna Doone is a woman of fine integrity. For some readers there may be two downsides - the somewhat long asides on the love of farm and nature (l loved these) and the very occasional dated statements regarding women (I did not take the seriously given the period in which it was written). In addition to all this, the story is a wonderful adventure and lots of fun.
Having recently visited Britain, I found the descriptions of the countryside to be absolutely beautiful - several times striking in the perception of the author. This is a classic work, so the structure of the language is a little different from the way we speak today, and the expression of emotion more dramatic - but very readable. What an eye opener it is to read the assumptions and views about the roles of women! This was written in the 1800's, but about the 1600's. The story was interesting, and there were also good descriptions of the differences between the urban and rural folk of the time, in addition to the political situation regarding tensions between Catholics and Protestants. Keep a box of Lorna Doone's by your chair and enjoy.
Set in England during the late seventeenth century the story is being told as it is being written in either a journal or manuscript by John Ridd. The author has a colorful cast of characters, beautiful descriptions of the country and wonderfully thought out and executed story line. I can understand why this is considered one of the best classic books in literature. The protagonist tells the tale of the Doones, who were a noble family turned into a band of outlaws. The Doones finding refuge in a valley for many years terrorized the people, most simple farmers, but it seemed impossible to put an end their villainous ways. John meets Lorna Doone when he happens into the valley when they were both children, they fall in love and he becomes her champion, but for years they must meet in secret. This novel is about many things, devotion, romance, adventure, greed and folly just to name a few. It crosses over the impediments of the social classes and is a great example of wealth is not an end all to happiness and the simple things in life might bring the most pleasure. I can say no more as I do not want to give away too much of the story, but if you haven't read this work and are a fan of the classics I do hope you add it to your to be read list.

Claire de Lune Christine Johnson Books

Why I read this: The cover was eye catching and it was about werewolves.. need I say more? :)

Plot: Claire starts to have some weird changes on her 16th birthday. She's getting rashes and having all sorts of weird cravings... and her mom drops the bomb - they're both werewolves. Unfortunately, her new crush has a father who is trying to find the cure for werewolves and will stop at nothing to try and capture the lone werewolf who has been murdering humans near where Claire lives.

I like the idea of only women being werewolves - as we often see the opposite. The plot moved forward and there's a bit of mystery as to which werewolf is the one who is going around murdering these people. There's glimpses into the werewolf as she goes to slaughter the next person and that really set the mood of the book into a darker tone - which I really liked.

Characters: Claire doesn't really react well to being a werewolf. She hates the thought that people would think badly of her if they found out her secret. Claire starts to experiment behind her mother's back and also refuses to stop seeing Matthew. She consistently sneaks out when her mother is not around and tries to hone her changing to and from werewolf form. I really liked Claire - she seemed very much the modern teenager who wasn't used to her mother being around and from that she really showed some independent thought and action.

Matthew is not drool worthy, but he's a nice guy - cute and fun for Claire to be with. He can almost distract her from all of her problems when she's with him.

Claire's mother is very aloof, as are a lot of the werewolves - but they survive on instinct and are not reliant on human relationships. Thus the lack of a father figure in Claire's life.

Relatability: I definitely cannot see much of me in Claire, but I do know a lot of teenagers like her. She's very realistic and I appreciated that.

Cover commentary: Love it. It's so pretty. Definitely one I want on my shelf.

Claire de Lune Christine Johnson Books Reviews

Claire is a normal teen girl trying to enjoy her Sweet Sixteen party. She's a little bummed about her mom not buying her a car, and also wondering what is up with the strange itching on her hands and face. Then Matthew, the boy she secretly has a crush on, asks her out. She feels like all is right in the world, until her mom drops a serious bombshell on unsuspecting Claire. Not only is her mom a werewolf, but so is she. The insane itching is the first sign that her transformation is beginning. Now Claire is faced with changes no other teen girl can even begin to relate to. She also has a date with the son of the doctor who wants to hunt her kind.

I really enjoyed this book. Claire is forced to reconcile her human feelings with her werewolf instincts. Not your typical coming of age story that's for sure. The romance between Claire and Matthew was sweet. I liked that it was part of the story without overshadowing the growth of Claire's character. She managed to play the smitten teen without crossing the line to completely codependent. That seems to be a difficult feat for some of the characters in young adult novels recently. The mystery of the killer werewolf was a nice addition, that kept me guessing until the end. I enjoyed the author's writing, and while this was slower paced it worked for the plot. This is definitely a series I plan to continue.
This is one of those books that, for me, set the tone from the very beginning. In the prologue as a reader you already have questions swimming through your head and you are hooked because you have to know who is doing these things. We are seeing through the eyes of the rogue wolf in the prologue and it gets the story off to a running start. The story for the most part revolves around Clarie, but every now and then we get a peak into the mind of the rogue wolf and those brief glimpses for me are very intriguing. The prologue sets a dark tone to the book, which does carry throughout the story, there are rays of sunshine beating into Claire's life periodically, but when you discover you are a werewolf at sixteen, you light is snuffed out just a little and I think the book reflects that well.

Claire is a good character, she is easy to relate to, and you are rooting for her from the beginning. You are also analyzing her love interest Matthew, because while he may like Claire, his father would forbid him from seeing her if he discovered what she truly was. That is what made me apprehensive about Matthew in the beginning. If he has had to listen to his father scream words of hate at the top of his lungs most of his life would it be so hard for some of that hate to seep through? Well, you will just have to read to figure that out for yourself because I do not want to ruin it for you.

This story also reminds me of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, wondering where I am going with this aren't you? Ok, well there is a line from there "Who is the monster and who is the man?" Well in this case it would be woman I guess, but this quote felt very appropriate to me for this book. While the main focus of the book spins around Claire and her dealing with being a werewolf, there is always that sub-plot of Matthew's father hunting the werewolves and assuming that they are all vicious creatures before getting all the facts. He has no care to find out the truth or be humane about it, he only wishes to kill the unknown and destroy anything foreign in his world. People like that just anger me, which was most likely how Christine meant for him to be, so in that respect she did a fantastic job.

I also like that in this book the werewolves are women. In almost all the other books I have read that deal with "were" of any kind, females are scarce, if not non-existent. So it was interesting to get new lore in this genre and a new outlook on werewolves. While the book does tie up most of the loose ends nicely I am still left wondering if there is more to Claire's story. There are still quite a few questions that linger for me and I wonder if there will be another book or if this will be a stand alone novel. Either way, it is a great debut for Christine and you should check it out if you have not already done so.

Language Love

"Misery shimmered around her like an aura"

I like thinking that an emotion could radiate off someone so much that you can almost see it. That is why I like this line from the book.
Why I read this The cover was eye catching and it was about werewolves.. need I say more? )

Plot Claire starts to have some weird changes on her 16th birthday.

Characters Claire doesn't really react well to being a werewolf.

Relatability I definitely cannot see much of me in Claire, but I do know a lot of teenagers like her. She's very realistic and I appreciated that.

Cover commentary Love it. It's so pretty. Definitely one I want on my shelf.

The Wedding Date eBook Jasmine Guillory

Alexa is the chief of staff for the mayor of San Francisco; Drew is a pediatric surgeon in L.A. Sparks fly when they're trapped in an elevator together, and Drew invites Alexa to be his date for a weekend wedding. She's looking to break out of a dating slump and agrees to go; they end up having a wonderful time and a long distance romance begins. But as they grow closer, will either of them admit that it's more than just a fling?

I will say two good things and one criticism about the book. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done.

The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.

And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.

There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically!

All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.

(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

The Wedding Date eBook Jasmine Guillory Reviews

Charming, sexy and funny, The Wedding Date delivered a swoon-worthy romance!

Drew finds himself stuck in the elevator where he's staying for the wedding of his friend and ex-girlfriend. He's the groomsman without a date, without his plus one! But getting stuck in the elevator happened to be what set in motion the best times of his life with a girl he can't get out of his head.

Alexa is at the hotel to meet her sister to celebrate Olivia's promotion to partner. Getting stuck in an elevator did not fit in her plans. But at least she had cheese, crackers, champagne and a hot guy to keep her company.

Drew takes a chance with this girl who makes him laugh and asks if she will be his fake date to an already awkward wedding. And while Alexa is normally a straight-laced, play by the book, don't stray too far from the center, kind of girl, she can't deny her attraction to and fascination with Drew. Throwing caution to the wind, she agrees and has the time of her life!

The next day, Drew has to fly back to LA and his job as a pediatric surgeon and Alexa has to go back home to Berkeley, where she works as the mayor's chief of staff. Miles apart, the two can't stop thinking about each other and the fun they had. One chance weekend turns into alternating weekend flights to see each other. Both are focused on their jobs, neither has experience with a good, solid relationship, yet they both find peace and solace in one another.

I found it fantastic that this couple actually talked about their feelings. They discussed their hurts, their fears, and their worries. And they genuinely loved each other. The kind of love that hurts when you aren't with the other person. When you stare across the room and ache to touch them, kind of love. Neither fears nor distance would keep them apart and I loved their struggles and their fights and their "I can't keep my hands off of you" moments.

I am a sucker for a good epilogue, and Guillory gave us a FANTASTIC one. It was tender and reverent, sexy and loving. It was the perfect ending to a perfect book!
Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)

From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.

Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)
Cliched, boring, predictable plot lurches from one soft porn love scene to the next. I was looking for something light and easy and entertaining, but I couldn't even finish this one.
I wanted to love it. The two leads have real jobs and each has a small circle of friends. But there was no oomph to the plot. I felt like the characters were just spinning their wheels until the inevitable happy ending. There wasn't even a good sense of place. San Francisco should be a good setting but this was the most generic version of SF.
I really love Alessandra's books. I enjoyed Hollywood Dirt a lot, but Love, Chloe just fell really short for me. The whole story and the way it was written just felt seriously disjointed. I felt like the fluidity of the story just wasn't there and I was bouncing around from thought to scattered thought.

I felt like the books started out with such promise. You have the spoiled rich girls who's world suddenly drops out from under her. Her college holding her diploma until she pays her tuition, her parents hiding from the feds, her fancy clothes the only thing left on her back. I felt like this could really get a chance at some true self discovery, and she did have some, but everything was so contrite to me. Even after everything she'd been through she was opinionated and bitchy. When she first meets Carter she brushes him off as the help, even though she is truly nothing but the help herself.

I did love how she was kinda put in her place when she found out that Carter was the original "rich kid" and he just wanted to make sure that she fell for him, and not the money. However I didn't like the way she just walked up to his door and they fell into bed, it just seemed so out of place to me. I never felt an honest connection between Chloe and Carter. The whole story with her boss and what was happening with her also just left a really sour taste in my mouth. The only one that I did like was her bosses husband, he seemed like the only one who was real with his feelings and his personality. So much of the book just made me dizzy with the back and forth, and the way it was written just didn't work.

Overall I just found the story to be lacking, and the ending really didn't work for me at all. I feel bad cause I know others loved this story but for me it just didn't work. However I do love Alessandra's writing in general and I will keep reading her books in the future.

Love Chloe a standalone novel edition by Alessandra Torre Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

What a perfect weekend read. It was rainy here and the perfect excuse for me to stay cuddled up in bed and read Alessandra Torre’s latest book. To tell you the truth I would have done it even if it had been bright and sunny, but at least the bad weather made me feel better about lounging around pretending I had nothing else to do. I waited all week to read this when I wouldn’t have work and other interruptions, and it didn’t disappoint. I’m used to the suspense and thrill of Torre’s books, but her talent isn’t only in those categories. No, she is also now a master of contemporary romance. This book is different than any of her others and just as intriguing. I was captured by the first page. I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for an angst-free, light-hearted read ready to get lost in the pages of Chloe Madison’s life.

Love, Chloe is Chloe Madison’s journey to self-discovery after her life as a spoiled rich girl is torn out from under her when her family assets are seized by the government forcing her to find a job and support herself. From living the life of the social elite to becoming ‘the help’.

They say the job makes the person. It needed to work faster. I was a disorganized mess, one that lived on fast food and my best friends’ scraps. I beat on the glass of my old world and desperately wanted back in, each day in my new life more discouraging, the varnish of my prior life rubbing off, a new Chloe emerging. I didn’t want her—I only wanted the past.

Chloe was easy to fall in love with as she found herself and became a better person. Each flaw she discovered and embraced and tried to make better, only made her that much more endearing. As she fought with her weakness for her ex who could give her life she once held and wanted, to meeting and falling in love with a maintenance man who helped show her a new Chloe. A better Chloe. One she wanted to be instead of the empty life she had led.

“…you’re nicer now,” she said gently. “You’re smarter. You see things differently. Before, you wouldn’t have given Carter the time of day.”

Alessandra Torre’s is one of my all-time favorite authors. Love, Chloe is a lighter book than she normally writes with surprisingly no angst. Instead, she provided us with a light-hearted, comedic romance filled with a love for fashion, drama, romance, and the power of friendship. I really enjoyed Chloe’s self-discovery and finding her place in her new life.

He made me realize how empty my old life had been. And in his eyes, I saw a future that I wanted more of, a future where I was a better person.

The Dark Highlander The Highlander Series Book 5 Karen Marie Moning 9780440237556 Books

The Dark Highlander is really three love stories. A love story between a man and a woman, between brothers and between a father and son.

Dageus is a druid with a problem. He has broken his oath in order to save his brother, Drustan. In breakng this oath, he has invited thirteen dark druid souls into his body that are slowly taking over. Once they take over he we cease to exist.

Chloe is a bright spirited and tenacious. She is passionate about relics, especially Scottish relics. She is about to go on adventure that will put her knowledge and heart to the test.

Again just like Kiss of the Highlander, The Dark Highlander is beautifully written. But where Kiss of the Highlander was a little lighter, The Dark Highlander is more intense. You still have the humour to break up the intensity but we learn the differences between they way the brothers deal with the world. It explores many relationships. You not only feel the love between Dageus and Chloe, but you get to know the relationship between the twin brothers and Dad and son all while trying to save Dageus. Dageus really learned how he fits into his family.

We also get to know more about the Compact that was created between The Tuatha De Danaan and The MacKeltar's. And the consequences of breaking the sacred Compact.

This book takes the reader on a journey through space and time. It has joy and sorrow and always leaves you wanting to this book again.

The Dark Highlander The Highlander Series Book 5 Karen Marie Moning 9780440237556 Books Reviews

As I come to the end of this entertaining episode of the Highlander Series (aka the "How a Highlander Rocked my World" tomes of delight) I've gotta say that I'm still all in with this series of books. Karen Marie Moning writes sexy alpha males like no one I've ever read before. Her guys are everything a woman could ask for and more than many could ever dream of. That being said, I'm not 100% satisfied with "The Dark Highlander."

Let me tick off a few good things first.

1. The hero, Dageus, is just...wow.
2. The sex scenes...I think it's going to take weeks for me to uncurl my toes.
3. The story is great. It drags a wee bit in spots, but nothing that really put me off.
4. Return appearances from a few well loved characters...always fun.
5. Time travel and evil druids...what's not to love?!

So what didn't work for me? Chloe. There was nothing really extraordinary about her.

-She was curious. Not really that unusual, but ok.
-She could interpret several languages. Admirable, but not earth shattering.
-She was crazy over "artifacts." Fortunate for her since Dageus has tons of them.
-She was naive and an innocent virgin. /shrug

I don't know. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm missing something really extraordinary about her, but I left the book feeling like he could have done better. Obviously, Dageus would disagree, though, and at the end of the day, it's really all about the HEA. And THAT I felt Dageus deserved, however (and with whoever) he could find it.

So, if you're hesitant about reading this book in the series...DON'T BE. It's worth it. It wasn't quite the emotional roller coaster that "Kiss of the Highlander" was, but ahhh...Dageus. He's worth the coin and the time. I promise. ;)
Alright, I give this one 3 stars cos of the plot. It was interesting to a point. But I feel like Dageus' story suffered a lot because of it. And that is why I'm left a little disappointed & ALOT wanting where his story is concerned. Let me attempt to explain myself... By the time I reached the 79% mark in this book, these were my thoughts...

"Is it just me or does Dageus seem ALOT hotter, a lot darker than the telling of his story? He's supposed to be the dark one right? The one fighting the intense forces of the 13 within him that no mortal man could possibly deny right? So why don't I see or feel all these things I'm being told are there? And what's with the glossed over sex scenes? Really? All that build up for this? Needs to be hotter."

Sadly my opinion didn't change.

The circumstances that lead you to Dageus & his story, the possibilities I should say, were much more intriguing than the actual reveal of them. I missed the struggle. That dark, intense decadence that should have been present throughout the telling of Dageus' story.

The immense pressure, uncertainty, & fear that should have been there wasn't. And I feel this too coincided with how he and Chloe related to one another & how their love would blossom. The very glossed over, barely touched coupling of these two, didn't help this story either and I'm not just speaking about the physical aspects.

While there was a promise of this early on in the beginning, it just didn't deliver when the time came.

When it comes to what we are told is at stake here. In Drustan's book & this one as well, that was more compelling than what we get here with the journey, answers, & resolution. Everything we are given goes no deeper than the surface. In comparison to the issues & what we actually got in the journey/reveal it just seemed so... Superficial. Simple. And this is why I've been found wanting.

This book is a good filler for the moving along of certain plots within this series to get you to the next chapter in this world. For that alone, I would recommend this read. Especially if you are following the series in order. But coupled with the telling of Dageus & his mate Chloe, it's not well balanced & their story within this story, suffers greatly for it.
I read all fivefold in predecessor for the second one, one of my favorites of this series. This is a time travel book with another intelligent virgin (Chloe). You can read these books as "stand alone" but I, for some reason, read the whole series. Sadly, I'm getting tired of this series, so will read the next one then go on to another book. This was too much like the last the one, so I was sort of disappointed in this book. Probably these books would be more enjoyable if read separately. Like her books, but in small does as in any authors series. Would be a good read alone book.
Perhaps the greatest praise I can offer here is that I knew immediately who John was because his voice and manner were so consistent with his character in the Mageri series. Thank you for giving him another chance to be a hero, and for tying up that little thread.

I have loved Christian since he first arrived in the Mageri series. In spite of his imperfections, and there are many, he is fundamentally a good guy, and I am 100% team Christian in this series.

For my more circumspect friends, there is more talking about sex than actually having any in this series, which means you can read the book, skimming only occasionally. If it were a movie, it would probably still be R for mature themes.

How to spend my life until book 3 comes out? Maybe I'll go back and do One Second. For those of you who haven't read the Seven series, there is a wonderful and full crossover between the main characters of both series in one or more of the books. I won't say which. Start with Seven. That series is a very in-depth look at the shifters in the Breed world.

Ravenheart Crossbreed Series Book 2 edition by Dannika Dark Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Raven Black is the most complex character Dannika has ever created. I love getting into her world. Paired with Christian, whose snarky attitude gives Raven plenty of chances to sharpen her quick wit, this book rocks! Hunting a serial killer pulls the Keystone team deeper together with each member becoming vital to finding justice for the innocent. In Keystone, book one, we met them and caught pieces of personalities, but in Ravenheart we find real depth and reasons to love them, especially Niko. He is a wide advisor, befriending Raven with an honesty that helps her grow both as a team member and as a woman. Who knew a blind man could see life with such clarity! Awesome writing, Dannika!!
The storyline in this book moves fast and crisp with little fluff. Every crossed leg, arched brow, and slammed door adds to the story without excessive descriptions to slow things down. It's perfect. The dialogue is clever, sometimes hilarious and often profound. As an author Dannika Dark is at a high point in her career with her talents and maturity shining through on every page of Ravenheart.

Can't wait for the next one!
New adventures, deeper character development and visiting with someone strangely familiar but not easily forgotten describes the complex woven web within the pages of Ravenheart. Book Two of Dannika Dark's new Crossbreed World has everything from allegorically wise old characters to novice young ones, each one with delft skill, growing fierce loyalty to each other and to Keystone. All characters are haunted by personal histories in a breed world they just don't fit into easily. However, the Keystone "Motley Crewe" does not fail to take us on a new adventure with a tantalizing chain of events as partners Raven and Christian forge partner bonds, friends with benefits and/or lovers with a smoldering undercurrent of sexual tension. Dark reveals characters' personal skills and deeper personality traits to readers through masterful writing and even gives her fans a little nod to a character thought long gone from the breed world with ties to Cognito. This book made me uncomfortable in a good way . . . it touched my heart, made me ugly cry, provoked my patience, and made me wish I had real friends like the characters Dark introduces readers to in the Crossbreed World. Young or old, square or round, the Keystone characters fit into my world. Is Book Three ready yet? I found it a good read even though I abhor the 'ugly cry!' 😍 --g
SPOILER ALERT There will be spoilers regarding the first book in this series.

This is a great follow up with Keystone. Raven is now a part of a pretty interesting group called Keystone. You have Viktor Kazan who is a Russian Shifter who put the team together. There is Blue, a Native Shifter who carries around an ax. Gem Laroux is a Mage with a bright personality. Claude Valentine is a Chitah who loves hair and taking care of women. Wyatt Blessing is the Gravewalking computer nerd. Niko is blind but deadly with a katana. Shepherd Moon is a sensor who looks like a murderer. And last but not least, Christian Poe who's a Vampire with an attitude and Raven's partner.

Keystone is called in to investigate some murders that have been taking place. It's possible there are about 50 related deaths, though nothing conclusive. They are women who appear to have been killed by a Vampire. The higher authority has placed Detective Glass in charge of the case, who finds Raven pretty interesting.

In the romance world Christian took the memory of his and Raven's kiss at her request so that they can work together. Doesn't stop some interested chemistry going on there. Also Detective Glass is interested in dating Raven, and she isn't totally opposed.

This book was great, I might even have liked it better than the first one. I'm a sucker for romance, and though there isn't anything going hot and heavy, I appreciate a steady build up, and that's what I'm feeling in this series. Bummed the next book isn't out yet, but really looking forward to it. Also there is a scene that about had me bawling. I managed to keep it in, but there was a real emotional connection it made. It's was beautiful. Five stars!!!
This book is well-written, not very difficult to read, but it uses some adult material, so keep note of that. Its like an adult story, written in a very, VERY mature YA format. Jack Spade is a very interesting and frankly, likeable character. He's not a complete thuggish protagonist, but his grittiness and mannerisms give off the impression that he's the bada$$ who can beat up that bully in high school...just no one knows. The problem is, everyone else in this dark world is a BA too. Spade is outta his league, and it shows. Personally, I wish he was tough as balls and a match for the hardest guys in Auckland, but its more realistic this way. He is a dark brooding boy, a "bad boy" for you girls lol, who had a really soft spot. He's a mix of the good guy and the bad guy in high school. I enjoyed this book within my limited expectations, a great hero, an unpredictable story, and some twists.
Leave Her Hanging by Harry St. John

When Jack "Spade" Miller's ex-girlfriend, Ella Lewis, is found dead and the old crowd is saying suicide, even her best friend, Megan, thinks, she hung herself. The police seemed to be going along with the idea, but Jack doesn't believe it for a second. He knows her too well and she would never do that. He is convinced, she has been murdered, and he is determined to find the guilty party and make them pay. For some reason his friends have turned against him thinking that Jack and her breaking up has caused her to take her own life. In his investigation, Jack is led through Auckland's underbelly, and he doesn't know who to trust. Maybe he can't trust anyone. Was Ella the girl he had fallen in love with? Did he really know her at all? Would he be murdered just as she was as he stumbles through the violence and depravity he is becoming entangled in?

Harry St. John has written an edge of your seat thriller. The plot is great, the title fits, and the action is fast paced. It's everything a good novel should be. It is written about young adults and I am convinced the YA crowd will love it. The ending left me more than a little surprised. Shocked maybe would be a better way to describe it. I usually know who the villain is before I get to the end. What a plot twist. I loved it. It was definitely something I never saw coming.

This book has it all Blackmail, violence, betrayal, and finally murder. I think Harry St. John did an amazing job on this book. There are still people out there that I think Jack Miller needs to track down and take care of. I'm sure there is another book in this series coming later. I don't think Harry St. John will leave us hanging.

I gladly give this book five deserved stars.
First-time Kiwi crime writer St John, who has written in other genres under another name, explodes onto the scene with this dark and thrilling young adult tale. Jack “Spade” Miller is a wayward teenager left looking for answers when his ex-girlfriend Ella Lewis is found dead.

While others lay some of the blame for the apparent suicide on Spade, he can’t believe Ella would kill herself, and sets out to find the truth. A dangerous quest that scratches at the veneer of stable suburbia and takes him deep into the Auckland underworld, where nefarious deeds are committed behind closed doors.

St John isn’t scared to take readers into some pretty dark and nasty places in this terrific debut; although it’s tabbed as a young adult read, with a teenaged ‘hero’, there are some very adult themes. Spade is a compelling centerpiece in a fearlessly told tale packed with intriguing characters. A new voice well worth listening to.
Awesomeeee
This book deserves all the good reviews it can get great book I love it and so much turn of events
A thin plot and it is quite incredible that the principal character who is so young could be so worldly!
This had promise. Great cover, enticing blurb, good storyline, but a tad superficial in execution. Well-written but lacked real depth. I didn't engage with the main character at all.
A taut expedition into the depths of human depravity, Leave Her Hanging is like a shot in the arm for someone who's afraid of needles. The grim reality of the story is made even more haunting by the youth of its narrator. Harry St. John knows how to tell a dark one, almost too well. A great piece for a modern fan of the noir genre, or anyone looking to feel a little depressed.

The Quiet American Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition Graham Greene Robert Stone Books

This is a fascinating look at the intrigue of a place and time that few Americans know much about--Vietnam in the early 1950s, during its struggle for independence from the French, and long before the conflict that brought it to the attention of the American public. The book was also written long before that more famous conflict (1955), so many of the scenes will seem fantastically prescient to a modern American reader. Some of that angered me, as it mirrored the American experience in the Vietnam War so closely, that you realize our leaders in the 1960s had no excuse for not knowing what they were getting us into. The narrator is a cynical British journalist--a bit too cynical for my taste, though he has some amazing insights into human nature. The treatment of the eponymous American is a bit high-handed at times, though sometimes deserved, and sometimes not. There is a smug dismissal of American naivete and meddling that is in part justified in hindsight, and in part seems like unwarranted cultural condescension. It is a well-told story, and it brings out the complications and enigmas of post-WW2 southeast Asia very well. I gained useful insights into the later Vietnam War era, but in the end I was left vaguely unsatisfied.

The Quiet American Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition Graham Greene Robert Stone Books Reviews

Leaving aside your feelings about the Viet Nam conflict, Greene is a truly great writer, who can describe a scene or situation in the fewest of words but with extraordinary effect. I read this because Nguyen, author of The Sympathizer, was reportedly much influenced by it. Greene's book is much better written (but to be fair at the point of writing The Quiet American, Greene was a more experienced novelist than Nguyen is now), and has more layers of moral ambiguities. But I'm still thinking about these books, and will for a long time.
This book gives a stark and unsparing on-the-ground view of Vietnam, or French Indochina as it was commonly referred to at the time, and early French and American involvement, in the early 1950s. The author was openly disdainful in real life of what he perceived as American crassness and naivete, which he proceeds to (sometimes blastingly, sometimes almost-sympathetically) portray in this story of Pyle, an idealistic young anti-communist American "diplomat", with devastating effect simply because Greene's contempt and rage are not without merit. Greene's belief that innocence is an evil in the world is disconcerting on a certain level, an idea worth struggling with. There is plenty of sometimes-lethal action, intrigue and an unflinching if subtly-couched look at the character flaws of the book's first-person British-journalist narrator, including but not limited to his reactions to Pyle's s stealing his Vietnamese girlfriend. The grim joke in the book's title is in the fact that Pyle dies in the beginning pages, making him a very quiet American indeed. The rest of the book is flash-back, detailing the intrigues, unique to that time and place and struggle and culture (including Pyle's callousness to the deaths of innocents in advance of his desire to impose "democracy" on another culture and country) that lead to his death. This book is a sobering learning experience, in view of the later American military involvement, whose denouement validated much of what this book has to say. Whether such a cynical view of the world is fully merited is a question for the individual reader to mull.
I re-read this after some years. It's my favorite of Greene's collection. He has an ability to immerse a reader in a story, so much so that even after I left the book for a day or so I never left the characters, who seemed to follow me hither and yon. The humor is subtle and deeply satisfying. Take this book on a cruise or on a trip to a mountain cabin. It's not a long book. You can get it done in a weekend.
“The Quiet American” takes place in 1950s Vietnam, a time when the French were still the ones fighting the Viet-Minh, and American involvement was all but invisible. It is narrated in the first person by Thomas Fowler, an English reporter living there and covering the war. The so-called “Quiet American” is Alden Pyle, who Fowler meets early in the novel, and who turns out to be both more and less than he seems.

With only one or two exceptions, the story manages to simultaneously maintain an underlying languidness even while events move along. The languid impression is conveyed by the seeming comfortable accommodation that Fowler and the other Europeans have made with an Asian lifestyle only possible for a more prosperous European detached emotionally from the trials of the nation around him. Fowler himself come off as a bit cynical on the surface, but this masks his quite realistic insights into what motivates both himself and those around him. It is perhaps his way of trying to make a joke of himself to keep these self-revelations from drowning him. He may be one of those people that tends to be a bit too hard on himself as well as on others. For example “ I couldn't have made the sentimental assumption that Pyle made. I know myself, and I know the depth of my selfishness. I cannot be at ease (and to be at ease is my chief wish) if someone else is in pain, visibly or audibly or tactually. Sometimes this is mistaken by the innocent for unselfishness, when all I am doing is sacrificing a small good -- in this case postponement in attending to my hurt -- for the sake of a far greater good, a peace of mind when I need think only of myself."

Through his characters, Greene expressed insights in the 1950s (when he wrote this) that still have the ring of truth today, over 70 years later.

In the story, reporters are professionally briefed by the military, where they receive the information the military wants them to have (and no more!), and after which they get “guided tours” (usually via air) of the scene of the most recent hostilities. Often if a reporter shows up, as Fowler once does, they will allow him to “embed” with the fighting unit so he can report firsthand. How do the soldiers view these civilian reporters? “Perhaps to the soldier the civilian is the man who employs him to kill, includes the guilt of murder in the pay envelope and escapes responsibility.”

After a bombing in a town square exacts a body count almost completely composed of non-combatant civilians, most of whom are women and children, a person with advance notice of the bombing dissembled about this aspect of it by saying that there was supposed to be a parade that day and that the hoped-for targets should have included a handful of high-ranking officers. This was responded to by the question "How many dead colonels justify a child's or a trishaw driver's death when you are building a national Democratic front?" Such atrocities in the capital are committed with the idea that they will wrongly be attributed to the insurgents (almost like a “false flag” operation, only without the staging of “evidence”).

Finally near the end, when the possibility is raised of ultimate direct involvement by the Americans, someone replies "At least they won't hate us like they hate the French." Very much like the wag who insisted in 2002 that the soldiers of a certain invading army would be greeted as liberators.

This is my second Graham Greene novel (“The Human Factor” being the first), and it is clear that Greene was one of the greats.

Raven’s Shadow Book One Blood Song Raven Shadow 1 eBook Anthony Ryan Reviews

Blood Song is a very unique Epic fabtasy novel that delivers it's story in a very different way. A way I found made the story exciting and confusing at the same time. The story of Blood Song follows Vaelin Al Sorna as he grows up in the Sixth Order and his adventures there and so on. I enjoyed this book a lot and Vaelin is an excellent protagonist to read about. The story is actually told through flashbacks of Vaelin as an adult recanting his life to Vernier. This storytelling mechanic was such a good idea, but after a while the story jumps and jumps and I found myself getting confused and that made it harder for me to read.
The plot itself deals very heavy on politics and religion or in this books case "Faith". There was so much talk about faith that I felt like I was being suffocated by it. Now I know none of this is real but with so much it being talked about I almost felt myself believing in said Faith. The politic end of the plot didn't really come into effect until half way into it. I found myself enjoying that more but I know this is only the first book and Anthony Ryan is building up to something because that ending was like, "WTF".
My only other negative about this book probably would be about the cast of characters in this book. I found myself not really caring about anyone other then Vaelin. I love stories that focus on one character but have an amazing ensemble of characters but this first entry in the Ravens Shadow trilogy was very much lacking in that aspect for me!
All in all I really did enjoy this novel and I cannot wait to continue on with the rest of the series!!
Recently re-read this so I could read book 2.

This is definitely within my top favorite books. I love everything about it. The concept of the blood song, the characters - especially Vaelin - the sweeping plot lines...I could go on and on. The world Anthony Ryan has built is epic. What I find most interesting is all the different religions and how they are all handled. It was just really interesting to watch how a belief system basically based on dead ancestors so influenced the characters and their way of life.

Vaelin is actually one of my favorite protagonists, and one of the best I've come across in a while. He's not a "golden child" hero, but he's not an anti-hero either. He's not good at everything, but he kicks butt anyway. His "blood song" is fascinating and I need way more answers than you get in this book. I love the way the book is structured as him telling his story to a master historian.

I really love this book. Recommended if you like gritty epic fantasy.

Content warning
Language. There's a lot of it scattered throughout. A couple uses of the F bomb.
Sex. No graphic or explicit scenes. It's mentioned that a couple has sex but it's more of a "fade to black" type thing. There's a few other mentions throughout.
Violence. Vaelin grows up in a battle-school. The whole book revolves around his learning to fight and then his multiple campaigns, but the descriptions aren't graphic.

The Last Days of the Romanovs Tragedy at Ekaterinburg Helen Rappaport Books

As someone with no previous knowledge of the Romanovs or the Tsar Nicholas II, I bought this as a first basic introduction. I wanted something easily readable and interesting, and this book did not disappoint.
The writing is good and holds your interest. The author clearly knows her stuff and pieces her full stock of anecdotes, research and knowledge into a tantalising narrative. Under her pen, the final humdrum 14 days of the Romanovs in captivity are converted into a tense account, with elements of a thriller. She maintains this doom-laden strength even while making tangential forays into the wider world of 1918: the chaos of the Russian revolution, the politics and players of the western world, relations between European nations, the concerns of the day.

Rappaport has a knack for bringing figures of the past back to life. We are given intimate and personal portraits of Alexandra, Nicholas and their daughters, as well as the humanity, honour and dedication of some of the ordinary people surrounding the family- the dear Dr Botkin; the servants, even one or two of the guards. There are also a few pages of photographs. The author also lightly garnishes the well-known facts with her own angle and conclusions, which nicely smoothes the overall effect, although the lack of footnotes or endnotes somewhat undermines its credibility as historic documentary.

The Last Days of the Romanovs Tragedy at Ekaterinburg Helen Rappaport Books Reviews

This book goes into the final days of the Romanovs after they had been moved to Ekaterinburg. The author really did a great job of research and made it one of the more interesting books on the subject. While reading the book I kept hoping for a different outcome although I knew what was coming but the description of the actual massacre was heartrending.

Rappaport does not go into great detail about Rasputin, just the necessary parts to the story and I appreciated not going over details that I've read by others. Also what happened to the assassins afterwards and putting the finishing touches on the story.

Very well done, but gut wrenching book.
This was a well researched and well written book. I truly enjoyed all of it and was sorry when it ended. I have read a lot of books about Tsar Nicholas and his Family but this was one of the best. I suggest that anyone curius about what really happened to the last Tsar read this book.
After reading The Romanov Sisters I wanted to know more about the family as a whole. This book is so detailed, I can’t fathom the research that went into writing it! It is a little mind boggling at times with all the different names and the revolutionary groups. The book is very informative and I am satisfied that I have learned so much about the Romanov family. Theirs is a tragic story who’s ending was so senseless.
Very long - difficult to get into. However, there are some moments when it seems to get more interesting, only to fall back into repetitive sludge all over again. It is bothersome that there are no footnotes, as others have mentioned. I would find myself reading and wonder how the author "knew" certain things that are presented as fact - when I think a lot of it is conjecture. The author is close to her subject and impassioned by it, however no one really comes across as likeable, and I have to wonder why to any or all of it. Why would anyone want to rescue the Romanovs - or why would they want to annihilate them (other than for the fact that the Russian people were desperately poor and the Romanovs were completely out of touch)? There are a lot of clichés used, which may 'sound' good, but ultimately prove distracting. I didn't realize that the book was supposed to account for the last 14 days of their lives. If that is indeed the case, it jumps back and forth far too much.
This was a fast paced, fact filled read that makes you feel that you're in the "House of Special Purpose" in Ekaterinburg. What happened to the Romanov family reads like a classic Greek tragedy; if only the Whites had arrived sooner, if only Lenin, Trotsky and Sverdlov weren't bent on revenge and murder, if only, if only, etc. The communists for 70 years called this despicable action an execution; an execution is a lawful punishment carried out as a sentence after a trial and guilty verdict. When and where was Nicholas' trial? And what sort of monsters shoot helpless, innocent women and children? This book is an historically accurate indictment of the Bolshevik killers.
This is the best book I've yet to read on the Romanovs (Nicholas II, Alexandra and their five children). For the first time, I was able to read in detail about their imprisonment and deaths. The book covers the last 14 days of their lives. It shares a lot of things about the Romanovs I never heard before. It explains the political air of Russia in that time. And it gives a gripping telling of their murders. It's the first time in a long time that a book made me feel fairly strong emotions (in this case, sadness of how the family was treated and their deaths). I had heard the author, Helen Rappaport, speak and had to buy this book. She researched in Russia - can speak some Russian (hey, anything more than "Nyet" impresses me greatly) - and writes so that it is hard to put the book down. I was most interested in the personal lives of the Romanovs, and she told quite a number of new-to-me pieces. I had known that Nicholas had bad teeth. But I did not know he suffered from pretty bad halitosis. If that's ever a "Jeopardy" question, I will know it! Or that Maria got caught having sex with a guard who snuck her in a birthday cake. I admire the author for her research talents and for her excellent writing. Thank you, Ms. Rappaport, for a wonderful book.

Rowdy A Marked Men Novel Jay Crownover 9780062333056 Books

I have been in love with the Marked Men series even since first picking up Rule. Now, don't get me wrong, I have loved every single guy in this series, but Rule has always had my heart. Well, after reading Rowdy's story, he has certainly gotten very close to Rule! Rowdy's story was amazing through and through, and Jay Crownover has certainly given us all another Marked Man to love!! Rowdy and Salem are so perfect for each other in every way possible. Not only that, but I felt this novel truly showcased Jay Crownover's talent. She told an amazing story about two amazing people who deserve all the love in the world. Every single line in this novel was so well written, and I never wanted it to end.

Rowdy has always been a bit of a mystery. We never really knew that much about him from the other books in this series, so I was excited to learn more about his past in his novel. We see a very different side of Rowdy in this novel though then what we have come to know about him. He never stays with a girl long since everyone has left him (in one or another) in his past. Rowdy holds anyone and everyone at arm's length for fear of the past creeping back up and repeating itself. When Salem comes back into his life, the girl that left him and hurt him the most, his life gets shaken up in ways that no one can imagine. Rowdy definitely doesn't make it easy for Salem because he's not quick to trust her newly found non-gypsy ways, but after awhile things heat up between the two of them and it becomes pure magic!

Salem has certainly not had an easy life either. When we learned more about her life with Rowdy when she was younger, I definitely didn't blame her for getting out of her town as fast as she could. The one thing I loved about her character was how hard she tried to prove to Rowdy that she was there, and there to stay. There is no one else for Salem, and she was determined to win Rowdy over no matter what! Salem was such a likable character, and she had me cracking up with her witty personality. She definitely isn't someone who holds back. But honestly, I loved how patient and understanding Salem was when it came to Rowdy and his need to re-develop his trust for her. Salem knew that it would take Rowdy awhile to fully trust her again, and because of the patience she had, their love developed naturally. She says what is on her mind, and tells it like it is. In other words, Salem is awesome and basically exactly who you want as a friend.

Watching Salem and Rowdy's relationship and love develop over the course of the story was absolutely beautiful. Yes, they had some ups and downs, but there was never any overwhelming drama that caused major craziness to ensue. Rowdy and Salem were there for each other when they needed each other the most. Their relationship is sweet, sexy, and fun and I enjoyed every single second of it! I also loved seeing what the rest of the group was up to, and there were definitely some major changes for certain characters in this novel!

Overall, this is an amazing addition to the Marked Men, and is a must read for all Jay Crownover fans. If you're looking for a fun, steamy read, this book is for you! This is all about recognizing the importance of second chances and remembering that it's the "lasts" that matter the most.

Happy reading :)

Rowdy A Marked Men Novel Jay Crownover 9780062333056 Books Reviews

I am in love with Rowdy and Salem's story. They are just so dog gone sweet! Yes, they're sexy. Yes, they're gorgeous. Yes, they've got stuff going on. But seriously, their history, their journey, their bond, their love... ugh, it was just so sweet! And I loved it!

Rowdy is fantastic. With his cowboy boots and his pompadour hair and his good nature, what's not to love about him? Nothing. His upbringing is sad and heartbreaking, but his journey is well fought and entirely necessary to get to the happy place he needs. He was intriguing in the previous books, but watching his journey is this book made me love him even more.

Salem is tough and beautiful, sexy and sensitive. She's the perfect match for Rowdy. Their history really touched me. The story about the tattoo on her back - one of my favorite scenes. Her childhood was equally difficult, but the blending of their lives was so sweet and incredibly touching, and then incredibly sad, and then incredibly sweet all over again.

Then you put Rowdy and Salem together, and Pow! I loved them! You can't help but root for them! They wade and maneuver through all the muck and mire from their pasts and their families, relish and rekindle the connection they've always had, and come out on top as the beautiful, destined couple they were always meant to be. Their story is giving Rome, my other favorite of this series, a run for its money.

But wait, there's more! In addition to Rowdy and Salem's love story, in addition to Rowdy and Salem's family issues, we get more of our Marked family. We get a little bit of everyone without it taking over Rowdy's story. While this can be read as a standalone, a true fan of the series will get the most of the special moments interspersed throughout the book. I loved getting everything I wanted in this book. It had it all, and I loved it.

Points of View James Moffett 9780451503077 Books

I read this book 40 years ago.
When I was in High School, I read this particular copy of this book. I was taking a writing class several years ago when I mentioned this book, unaware that it had been revised. The teacher hadn't heard of it, but he bought the revised version and loved it. I also purchased the revised edition and enjoyed the diversity of the stories.from what I remembered the original to be. Out of curiosity, I purchased another copy of the original and still enjoyed it. (roughly 40% of the original stories have been replaced with more diverse stories) The original was used in an all boy's school in the 1950s and 1960s so the stories replaced in the new version are more diverse (for both women and minorities) Several of the replacement stories reveal how writing has changed in those last 40 years. There are more authors who are currently popular.
But. This anthology still stands well on its own if you bear in mind what audience it was put together for. The strategy of putting stories in a sequence from interior monologue in first person through various methods of first person narration through third person limited to complete omniscient third person narration is one that should become much more familiar to literature teachers and professors all over.
The person who was teaching the writing class I attended had an MFA from the Iowa School and I was shocked that he was not more familiar with this book. I would state that anyone who is serious about writing should have well thumbed copies of several books on their reference shelf. This should be one of those books.

Points of View James Moffett 9780451503077 Books Reviews

I first read James Moffetts collection of short stories arranged by "Points of View" which I found very heloful as an aspiring writer. Over the years I referred to it until one day it disappeared.
I then ordered another copy and found it was a second edition with additional stories, some replacing those from the first edition.
That book was also valuable but I wanted to have the original edition, also and was delighted when I found such a copy on .
The book arrived as hard cover, an improvement over my original copy, had not been marked or mishandled in any way. I think i got a bargain and am very pleased with the care James Moffett did in illustrating the various ways a writer can tell his/her story.
Far from pedantic, this book is an essential part of every writer's library. It was suggested reading for a workshop at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival which in itself is quite a recommendation.
Interesting organization of stories. Great for teaching.
This is a great basic collection of short stories. I was assigned this for a class, but I find myself reading the stories I wasn't even assigned! I also appreciate the authors' comments on the different narrative forms even though I don't always agree!
The first edition has the excellent story "This is My Living Room," which is omitted in the next edition. This story alone
is worth the price for showing the workings of the mind of a racist. The other stories are also very good. I just wish it
were on since I keep having to buy it as I travel around the world!
In my opinion, this is the best book there is for learning about "points of view." I like the fact that it is a collection of short stories rather than of excerpts from longer works.
This book offers an excellent selection of stories written in various points of view. If you want to accent your studies or if you need to see the point of view element in action, this book is the perfect source. Chapter organization is based on each type of point of view so that the reader can zero in on whatever point of view she would like to review. The authors featured are both classical writers and modern authors. After working through dozens of books on point of view, this one stands out from the others.
This book is a keeper. It belongs in the collection of any serious writer.
I had been in a book slump when Southern Sunshine discovered this book. She was shouting from the rooftops about how great this book is. Well, as soon as I was able to read it I did, and I am thrilled I did!
Dominic Knight is an ALPHA male to the 10th degree. He is just on this side of perfection and even with his flaws he is perfect enough for me. He is a powerful businessman with a dash of a Dom personality. Katherine Hart is a spitfire. The witty banter between them is highly entertaining and smoldering. It’s like preheating an oven for something delicious that is to come. From their first meeting the reader can tell that the chemistry between them is so obvious.
“His deep, velvety tone melted through her body, turning on everything that could be turned on, again. Jeez, who would have thought using your vibrator before an interview was a requirement?”
Katherine is a game changer for Dominic. He has a playful side to him. When he is playing “the game”, he plays to win. His unique tactics for giving pleasure to his lover makes this book exciting and will get the blood pumping to areas of your body that might have been a bit neglected lately. I was talking about your brain, get your mind out of the gutter.
When I began reading this book I had some preconceived ideas of what to expect. I heard it was a Dom type book but so different from anything I probably have read. I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. C.C. Gibbs took a rather bad boy Dom to a different plane. Dominic has an edge to him. His past is not one that fairytales have been mused from. He struggles with being someone’s Mr. Right instead of being Mr. Right now. He wants something more out of life, a life with Katherine maybe. Katherine’s character was having me high fiving my kindle every time she dished it right back at him with his demands. It is breath of fresh air to have a female be equal to a dominant male and for his ego to not get in the way of what could be a perfect match. The supportive characters remained just that…supportive. They didn’t over shadow the main characters or take the storyline off course. The main character’s story had many facets and even though it is a fantasy of mine, the reader could believe that this could really happen.
To find the answers of how this story will end, you will have to read All He Needs. WOMEN OF THE BOOK WORLD, I AM SCREAMING! YES SCREAMING FROM INSIDE MY HEAD AND ONTO THIS PAPER! YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! CAN YOU HEAR ME; Oh ok was I too loud? So sorry… Head down in shame. OH SHIT F$#& THAT!!! I NEED TO KEEP SCREAMING!!! Alright I have calmed down a little. Where do I begin? Omg Omg this story just excites me so much, I CAN’T STAND IT. Really I am good now, so I will move on.

If you could not tell this book really thrilled me and in so many ways, I tell you this story is so scorching hot I was ready to hump and grind anything and everything in my path.

The characters of Dominic and myself (oh I mean Kate) have the best chemistry I have ever felt. Dominic is our typical rich tycoon always getting what he wants. He is super Alpha and very Dom but this is not a D/S book, although it has the kink in it. He is used to the women in his life wanting him for his money and power and doing whatever he pleases. Kate is not very good at listening. hehehe

Kate is a smart, sexy, beautiful, independent, headstrong woman. When he offers her a job with his company she tells him NO. That word is not in Dominic’s vocabulary; it will just make him work harder until he gets the YES he wants. I am so attracted to him ( sorry…did I do it again). I meant she is so attracted to him but is going to fight it by squeezing her thighs together and locking it up tight. WELLLL we all know by now that does not last. Let me tell you, I will never look at a bar the same way again. Once these two go at each other they can’t seem to stop, and they agree that this fling is only to last until her two week contract expires with his company. Dominic is hell bent on keeping her working with him beyond that time frame but Kate has other plans.

Dominic is different from the emotionally unattached men in books. There is a lot more to learn about him, and I love how the author does not play the big 360 where he falls madly in love right away. He is doing things he normally does not do with women, and the people in his inner circle are very intrigued by how different he seems to be with her. You know that he is developing feelings by the things that are happening and the way he treats Kate. Our girl Kate is another story. Her head says one thing but her heart is going full force but she will try to be realistic and stay planted on the ground.

I am not going to tell you anymore. I think you all get the picture about how much I love this book. It is a series and is three parts, Part two will be out soon, but I will be reviewing the ARC of the second book for you all very soon. I literally stopped reading and had to shout out on Facebook about this book and I was only about 30 percent into it. I have never done that. If you are thinking of waiting to read this series until all three books are out, DON’T! It has a cliff at the end but it is not too bad. The author has literally created a character that has ruined me.

Before you sit down to start reading, make sure you have all supplies needed a phone to call fire department, your significant other close by, or extra batteries, a towel, and some wine.

When Rains Fall The Lost Fields Book 1 eBook Cassidy Taylor

When the main character of the book has to bust out her ax twice in the first few chapters, it might make you think she enjoys fighting. But it's not that simple. Sibba, one of two female leads in this epic adventure, has complicated feelings about violence. There's the way her culture wants her to be, and there's what her heart pulls her toward. She's tough as nails but also real and vulnerable. She's capable of hurting, but more so of being hurt. Which is why I found myself rooting for her to both kick ass and find her peace.

And then things get complicated. Because Sibba is written incredibly well, so of course you want her enemies to eat dirt and suffer, right? Wrong. The line between friend and enemy, between "good guys" and "bad guys" isn't fixed in this world. Just as in real life, everyone does things for a reason. Acts that seem vicious and unforgiving might be motivated by love or loyalty. Characters whose paths cross Sibba's own are fascinating in their own rights.

And this is what really made me fall in love with this book. Yes, the writing is beautiful. Yes, the action is tense and thrilling. Yes, the characters and the world are rich and real, drawing on mythology that seems familiar while being new and enticing. But what makes me hungry to read the rest of this series is the way Taylor treats the themes of love, acceptance, anger, betrayal, and fear. There is such a beautiful and nuanced treatment of human emotion. Of the ways in which the strongest of us can be weak, and vice versa.

If you're looking for a story about young women growing up and coming into their power in sometimes painful ways, this is it. If you're looking for a story where heroism doesn't simply mean bashing in someone's skull, but might mean admitting when you need help, this is it. If you're looking for a story that fiercely celebrates the written word and the human spirit, this is it. A must read for those who love fantasy, magic, lore, strong female characters, and rollicking adventure.

When Rains Fall The Lost Fields Book 1 eBook Cassidy Taylor Reviews

This was a great story. The two main stories keep things interesting and help to make a complete story. The characters are forced to grow and change as they are faced with many challenges as well as situations that are beyond their control. They are complex and interesting and detailed enough so the reader feels invested in their fate. I’m looking forward to the next book.
I enjoyed reading about Rayne and Sibba as they each went through challenges and heartaches. Though their paths didn't cross in this book, it seemed like it would likely happen soon. I am eager to see how that would play out. This was an excellent first in series and I look forward to the next book.
Book 1 of The Lost Fields follows two young women essentially displaced in their worlds, trying to discover their roles as leaders, and how they morally handle that in relationships and in life changing decisions. The stories take place on either side of the Impassible Straight, but are very much linked. I initially had some difficulty getting oriented with the two story lines and how they are connected, but once was over that hurdle really enjoyed the plots, characters and world.
I felt satisfied with the conclusion of the novel and am eager to continue on with the next book. There is plenty of opportunity for great adventure in this series and I can’t wait to read it!
Sibba and Rayne are great characters, love following their adventures! They are both strong and relatable women trying to figure out their places in the world. It took a few chapters to get oriented into the world and how the two stories connected as it's a broad land with many cultures and a rich backstory. I also thought it was great that the novel was LGBTQT+ friendly and that fit easily into the cultures shown in the story. Story has a satisfying ending and does not end on a cliffhanger with plenty of material for the next book to build on.
I loved this book, and it’s prequel novella (The Dry Season) and cannot recommend them enough! They have left me wanting more in a way I haven’t found in a series in a while.

The women in this are powerful and strong and the kind of characters everyone can resonate with. The world building was fantastic and I was completely engrossed in both sides of this story (if I have to choose later it’s going to break my heart!).

A few pieces of her world I’ve read in other books in a newer, fresher take. Cassidy Taylor did an excellent job of melding snippets of various lore and really making me fall in love with all of her characters. When Rains Fall, the first in The Lost Fields series is a new favorite of mine and I cannot wait to continue it!
The author has painted vivid kingdoms where her characters live, love, work, and war. I loved the 2 strong female characters who each had their own battles to fight as they uncovered secrets to their pasts. The story moves quickly and the scenes are well written; putting the reader right in the middle. This is not my normal genre but I am excitedly waiting to find out what other events unfold for Sibba and Rayne - the story is no where near over!
I'm very hard to please, so it's always refreshing to read a good book that leaves a positive impression!

When Rains Fall is about two women (with swapping points of view between them) who never meet, but have ties that you slowly begin to uncover. Both women have known tragedy, and yet their will and strength to push past their obstacles is lovely to witness.

Both main characters are flawed, but determined. I found them each likable in different ways and enjoyed a lot of the characters they came across. (Including a sexy General. *Cough*)

The world-building is fantastic, the writing is smooth and flowed well. The only note I would make is that the beginning takes a bit to get into (there's a lot of history!). But after that? The pages turned like lightning! (... Pretend that made sense.)

I highly recommend and can't wait for the next book in this series to come out!!

If you like high fantasy with strong, capable women who kick a lot of ass, then you'll like this one!

Dark of the West Glass Alliance Joanna Hathaway Books

Dark of the West was a fantastically full-figured fantasy steeped with intrigue, adventure, and a subtle touch of romance. This brilliantly written debut had a delicious slow burn that took its time developing every character and the tendrils that connected each to their nations and to one another. The intricacies involved in creating a story this rich were vast, but its readability for how detailed it was rivaled many of its kind, and I could not put it down upon starting.

Hathaway adeptly crafted a character-driven novel and kept it that way, in no rush to force connections that would have felt weak had they been introduced sooner. The danger of the court—of every player having a personal agenda—played through the entire story, twisting and arcing around every character and creating this thick tension that stayed with me until the last page. The voices of Athan and Aurelia were sound, developed so well they were effortless to fall into and become one with. While I adored them both, Athan spoke to me the most and I can’t get over how brilliantly he was penned—to feel as meek as he should’ve been, but full of a self-conviction that rivaled it. The sweet connection between the two felt like the truest thing either had ever experienced, and was the fire that sparked Athan and Aurelia into finding who they were meant to be.

The lushness to its plot and character development made Dark of the West the beauty that it was, and I’m eager for what’s to become of our beloved characters in the game of power surrounding them—the foreshadowing in the prologue made even better when reread after turning the final page. This fantasy re-imagining of WWII left me spellbound and is an absolute must-read.
I LOVED this book and am now obsessed with this world. A fantasy world at war inspired by World War II-era Europe? It is just as beautiful and bittersweet as it sounds.

Some books move so slowly you feel as though your soul is being sucked away. Other books move at a steady progression, building and building, while you know a sudden crescendo will bring it all crashing down. This is the latter and it’s still building.

The MOMENT I finished I went back to read the Prologue straight away and it just hit me SO. DAMN. HARD. Seriously, read the book and then read the prologue again. Good luck keeping those tears at bay. I knew it likely took place later in Aurelia and Athan’s story, but it doesn’t take place at the end of this book and we are still learning about these two, their relationship and what will bring them to that point in the prologue. There is still so much to come.

And let me just say, this book is written and plotted fantastically. Ingeniously. The characters have a well of depth, much of it still to be discovered. Hathaway paints these characters well. They are young. They are impressionable. They want to be heard and want to please. They are teenagers. They are realistic.

As I was reading, I couldn’t help but think of movies like Atonement – and I just have this sickening feeling we are headed down a very similar path, but I also can’t look away. I know this story is gritty and the world Hathaway has written is sweeping and golden in its detail. I know there are dark things to come and things are only just beginning but I have to know. I have to know these two will eventually get their mountain.

This is a story about the desperation of war and love and finding your voice. THIS is the type of story that will stick with you. THIS is the type of story that should be written and I’m so very grateful it was.
I received an advance review copy of this novel and it’s all I have thought about since!
What a fantastic read! A story of young, star-crossed lovers coming into their own in the midst of a world about to ignite into war, this book grabbed me and did not let me go. Deception, changing alliances, rebellion, and betrayal all come together as part of a vast and deadly game in which casualties don't only occur on battlefields. Reveals keep the stakes rising, and the plotting of the commanders and the nobles—as well as the two young protagonists I rooted hard for—is only matched by that of the author herself as she brilliantly creates this world. Can’t wait for the sequel. Recommended for fans of The Winner’s Curse.
I loved this book - when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it! The prologue was really confusing, but as the book progresses it makes more sense and gives you insight to the series and makes you think “how is that even possible”!

The book definitely has romance, but the looming war and plot twists had me never wanting to put the book down. The different point of views were written perfectly and I feel like Athan and Aurelia are my dear friends and I just want to know where their story goes.

The only reason I dropped it to 4 stars is because the character names were so unique, it was hard to read sometimes (am I saying it right, who is that again?). I even missed one plot twist because I forgot who or what that name meant and I had to stop and figure it out.

Needless to say, I cannot wait for the next book in the series and I’ll definitely reread Dark of the West!
I got it yesterday and I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. Seriously in love with these characters and I NEED a sequel ASAP. #Troublemakersgang

Him Her Him Again The End of Him Patricia Marx 9780743296236 Books

Overall, Him Her Him Again The End of Him is witty and entertaining. Patricia Marx used to write for Saturday Night Live and after reading this it is easy to see why. However, the neurosis and excectricities of the characters get a tab bit exhausting by the end. This is the story of one woman's ten year obsession with an obnoxious, philandering, pseudo-intellectual man named Eugene. The narrator's fixiation on Eugene is often times laugh-out-loud hilarious as are her descriptions of her day-to-day life. This is a quick read and would be great for a plane trip. Him Her Him Again The End of Him reminds me a lot of Amanda Filippacci's novels, so if you liked Vapor, Nude Men, or Love Creeps you will be sure to love Him Her Him Again The End of Him.

Him Her Him Again The End of Him Patricia Marx 9780743296236 Books Reviews

Well written and it's got the "what's next" interest that keeps you from wanting to put the book down. The book explains feelings without explaining why they occur -- I really like that approach.
I great read about relationships and how they end.
The best thing about bad boyfriends is dishing about them during and especially after. There has never been a worse boyfriend or a more enjoyable dish than this sharp, funny, and even wise and touching book by Patricia Marx. We know long before she does that Eugene is a narcissistic cad who does not even remotely deserve her affection. But she makes us feel the pull of his attention and learn along with our appealing heroine that just because someone calls your kisses recondite and notional does not mean he is smart and just because he has another girlfriend (whom he marries) but still wants you does not mean you matter to him. We may never know how many grains of sand it takes to make a heap (read the book, you'll know why this is relevant), but we can tell less then three sentences into this book that we are in the hands of an author who has mastered the art of telling a story with wit, heart, insight, and meaning that is far from recondite and phenomenologically notional.
A good rollicking picaresque novel that is modern, quirky, and surreal. I love her deadpan delivery of outrageous stories, and her descriptions of her pathetic but endearing characters.
It was boring, long, and rambling about a guy who never cared about the main character. I wish I had spent my $10 on something else.
Patricia Marx is a writer whose work I never fail to enjoy in THE NEW YORKER so I was excited to read this novel. While I can't say I relished it as much as I do Mx. Marx non-fiction work, it was witty, as I expected it to be, with original characters and an appealing English setting. I look forward to her next novel and will surely read it.
I bought this because it was #1 on a list somewhere as 'Must read after a breakup'. It was a bit boring, with the characters leaning more towards annoying than interesting. It wasn't terrible or anything, but it wasn't particularly great either. Instantly forgettable.
I enjoyed Addie & Chas’s story a lot. Watching them fall in love and get over their pasts and fears was awesome!
I liked that there was some drama to it, but that it was solved and they got their HEA.
really hard to not crack a smile at how ridiculous the story is and how totally one dimensional and selfish the characters are. "I have a psychotic ex after me, I've been assaulted, Your son is being abused and neglected, but its all good cause we just jump into bed together."
I didn't write a review for the first two books but I will say they keep me on the edge of my seat. There was never a dull moment . I love how Chiah had the sexy alphas with sassy and sometimes shy ladies. There was suspense, some heartbreak, always hot and steamy sex, plus a lot of caring for each other. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I know that it will be just as good if not better than the last.
Interesting twists to woman on the run and studly biker. Abbie is in hiding as a librarian who is helping young Jack with his reading. His mother is an abusive, jealous failure. His father Chas is the studly biker who loves his son and falls for Abbie.

The seatbelt is a nice idea but the reality is not.

"When she gazed out the window, she saw Chas straddling a big-ass Harley, the streetlights bouncing off its chrome, and Jack snuggled behind him wearing a safety belt and helmet."

No desire to re-read this story. I maybe interested in other works by this author.
Great, this was just as good as Hawk's Property. CHAS falls for his son's, Jack, teacher. She doesn't have a models figure, she's happily curvy. Chas thinks she is the sexiest woman he has ever seen. He is sexy, ripped and melts for her and Jack. They have their problems with Addie's husband and Chas's ex wife but of course there's a happy ending. Wonderful. I enjoyed every page CHIAH and can't wait for Axe's turn. I hope he falls for someone who is strong and wants him from the beginning.
This is my second book in this series and I really enjoyed Chas and addie. Chas is over the top alpha male and Addie seems as though she can hold her own with him even though she does let him slide with a little bit more than most woman would. I enjoyed little Jake's character as well and what he added to the storyline. This would have been a 5 star for me but I felt like the author dragged story out just a little bit. Some things were starting to be repeated and it was like, yes we already know this... if the story was wrapped but maybe 10 chapters sooner it would have been a 5star. I still enjoyed it and will be reading more in the series.
I think I have fallen in love with this series. Okay, a little over dramatic, but I do really like this series. So far the next book is better than the last.
Chas and Addie, aka, Lizzie's story, she was running from an evil husband while he was getting tired of an hang on ex wife. Addie was a librarian trying to help out his son. Chas knew that he wanted Addie from the moment her first met her, but didn't expect to fall for her.
I can't give this series enough praises. I highly recommend this book and series if you like alpha males and the MC. However, I do recommend reading the books in order. Happy reading.
