I've had this book on my tablet for quite a while and only just got around to reading it. I wish I had read it sooner! It's a great read. The author does a fantastic job of presenting a world where Fae are real, and how that could affect society--I really love books that present a cool setting *without* dumping page after page of background. It's woven into the story from the very beginning. I can't wait to read book 2.Tags : Demon Hero: Dark Fae Hollow 1 (Dark Fae Hollows) - Kindle edition by Jae Vogel, Charmed Legacy, Dark Fae Hollows. Demon Hero Dark Fae Hollow 1 Dark Fae Hollows edition by Jae Vogel Charmed Legacy Dark Fae Hollows Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Demon Hero is the story of Vee, a "simple bartender", who turns out to be not quite so simple. Turns out, she is Fae, the repressed race in her society, and feared by all humans. When Talon, the revolutionary leader, attempts to recruit her from the bar where she works after she is outed as Fae on camera, she discovers that all is not as it seems. Fae are more abundant that she realized and Lycans exist as well, much to her surprise.
While Talon would like for Vee to be the face of the revolution with her new-found fame, Vee has mixed feelings & shifting emotions which make her seem very indecisive at times. However, her indecision is also used as a pivot point to change the course of the narrative over the course of the story.
While I enjoyed getting to know Vee and the other characters in her world, I found it difficult to form an attachment to them. At the end, I found myself cheering for the underdogs, even though the situation seemed quite grim.
If you're a fan of dystopian settings, you might enjoy this, but I found it to be a little too dark for me to completely enjoy.
This was a well-written novel with some themes that were quite upsetting. Worst of all was the concept of government inspired fear of a minority group - the fae - leading to its almost being wiped out. I'm Jewish so that whole context is one I find disturbing. Despite this Jae Vogel does such a good job in setting up her characters, their complex motivations and their interactions with each other and the world around them that the story is quite engrossing and somewhat addictive. I've finished it and want more, which can't be anything but a sign that this was actually a pretty darn good book. Definitely recommended.
I got to 60% and just had to stop. This girl was so stupid and wow, no other way I can put it. So she runs off and has sex with a rebel leader then the next day she sneaks out to run back into danger, then when he saves her she tells him he's dead to her. Then she hears a plot to neutralize all fae and she decides to run off into s the wilderness with the nice guy who had been her boss for 2 years that she now wants to bang. They find the town surrounded so her answer is the only way to stop the war is to give up the fae and let the evil government know that the fae are going to be staging an attack that it looks like they are already prepared for. This will end up with her neutralized and locked up for life, along with all the other fae that just want their freedom to be themselves! I can't even begin to understand her mind. As if all this wasn't enough, her constant internal and verbal dialog was off putting, nonsensical and then died to sound super intelligent, but instead came across as a confused person who didn't really understand the meanings of the words she was using. If was a struggle to read this and try to understand what the character was trying to say. After the last stupid decisions I read, I just had to quit. This was one awful story. It was a really bad decision to make this the first in this series because even though I know other books are by other authors, I just have no desire to read them. This boom just turned me off to the series as a whole.
The Fae have been pursecuted to the point of almost extinction. Forced to hide in plain sight, in human looking forms, they struggle to survive. The government fosters fear among the people, making the situation untenable. A group of Fae are trying to organize, to stage a revolt...Talon the leader, tries to recruit Vee, a bartender at a pub. Sol owns the pub, and has his own set of problems. All three are pivotal to the survival of Fae and human alike. Drama, action, intrigue, and a wee bit of romance. A fun read!
Received as an ARC, voluntarily reviewed.
Verdant, Vee for short, is a fairy living in hiding in a repressive anti-fae society. She works at a bar with Sol, who has always treated her as an equal. One night she hears one too many anti-fairy boasts from a group of drunken bigots and she gets angry and outs herself. Talon, another Fae, takes advantage of the situation to have his group fight the police and then help Vee escape the aftermath of the fight.
There are big things going on in the world and, after Vee experiences a few moments of freedom to be herself, she realizes how repressed and afraid everyone is. She finds out Sol has been hiding his own secrets and pain. The government is dealing with the "fairy problem" by offering "naturalization" a way to become human with an injection. Mass injections are scheduled for just a few days after the bar fight.
Demon Hero, as the start of a new series, focuses on the conflict and Vee's exploration of the choices available to her and the philosophy and considerations about freedom, inter-species relations, government's role and "human nature". There is a lot of philosophizing in this book and at times it bogs down the story. There are great action scenes and the bones of an exciting world, but this is for the more thoughtful reader.
Demon Hero is book 1 in the Dark Fae Hollow series.
This was a confusing read for me, I think it's the writer's style, rather than an overall dislike of the story. Some of the scenes seemed unclear, then they segued awkwardly. I especially had a hard time following Vee's switching back and forth between Sol--who seemed like a nice guy, and Talon, a manipulative ass. She changed her mind too often for me to sympathize with her character. The book goes to 16 percent, after which there was a lot of other stories added. The price was good for what you got, but I was done after this one story.
I've had this book on my tablet for quite a while and only just got around to reading it. I wish I had read it sooner! It's a great read. The author does a fantastic job of presenting a world where Fae are real, and how that could affect society--I really love books that present a cool setting *without* dumping page after page of background.
