The Fitzgeralds And The Kennedys An American Saga Doris Kearns Goodwin Books Reviews

It's a heavy book, both in substance and actual weight. Doris Kearns Goodwin is an excellent scholar and writer.
The public has long been obsessed with the Kennedy clan. This book gives you insight into Rose Kennedy's childhood and upbringing (she was the daughter of John 'Honey-Fitz' Fitzgerald). Her natural instinct for politics and campaigning is easy to understand from this vivid portrait of life in the Fitzgerald household and the sphere they influenced. You are introduced to a young Joseph Kennedy and see his early ambition firsthand. Each of the children are profiled, warts and all. A worthwhile read if you enjoy American politics, particularly the Kennedy influenced variety.
I bought three of these. I started with one and by the time I had read about the early Irish in Boston, I bought two for some Irish friends. The story dragged on a bit, as history can, but it was worth reading to better understand the Kennedys of my lifetime. Goodwin is a great writer; I've read many of her books and enjoyed the journeys.
Doris Kearns Goodwin is my all-time favorite historian. I had a copy of "The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys" many years ago, and like a dummy gave it away. I've already read it (good book); this is my replacement copy for my genealogy collection. I am always confident of Doris' research. Arrived in good condition.
Typical DKG! A tale of America's unofficial Royal family written in a style that demands full attention from the reader. It's everything you wanted to know about the Irish born Fitzgerald & Kennedy clans and more.
but I found this book fascinating. DKG writes this history like a novel and could not put it down. The only part I did not care about so much was once it got to JFK winning the Presidency, as I knew all of that (at the very end of the book, so 98% of it was riveting).
Histories of both Joe Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald's families, all the way back to when they came to the US,
DKG sets the tone and scene well, so you feel like 'you are there'. Got it from the library originally, bought a copy for rereading.
The description of the terrible living conditions of the Irish immigrants was shocking and explains in part this family's drive to achieve. The story also shows how, despite his many flaws, the strong father figure that Joseph P. Kennedy provided was a vital ingredient in the family's strength. A fascinating story.
The author (Doris Kearns Goodwin - also author of Team of Rivals - another great book) is an exceptional writer that is among the best story tellers of history. She writes in a way that makes history a pleasant, readable narrative. This book has over 800 pages, so you get your money's worth - well worth investing the time to read it.
