This book is well-written, not very difficult to read, but it uses some adult material, so keep note of that. Its like an adult story, written in a very, VERY mature YA format. Jack Spade is a very interesting and frankly, likeable character. He's not a complete thuggish protagonist, but his grittiness and mannerisms give off the impression that he's the bada$$ who can beat up that bully in high school...just no one knows. The problem is, everyone else in this dark world is a BA too. Spade is outta his league, and it shows. Personally, I wish he was tough as balls and a match for the hardest guys in Auckland, but its more realistic this way. He is a dark brooding boy, a "bad boy" for you girls lol, who had a really soft spot. He's a mix of the good guy and the bad guy in high school. I enjoyed this book within my limited expectations, a great hero, an unpredictable story, and some twists.

The police seemed to be going along with the idea, but Jack doesn't believe it for a second. He knows her too well and she would never do that. He is convinced, she has been murdered, and he is determined to find the guilty party and make them pay. For some reason his friends have turned against him thinking that Jack and her breaking up has caused her to take her own life. In his investigation, Jack is led through Auckland's underbelly, and he doesn't know who to trust. Maybe he can't trust anyone. Was Ella the girl he had fallen in love with? Did he really know her at all? Would he be murdered just as she was as he stumbles through the violence and depravity he is becoming entangled in?

Harry St. John has written an edge of your seat thriller. The plot is great, the title fits, and the action is fast paced. It's everything a good novel should be. It is written about young adults and I am convinced the YA crowd will love it. The ending left me more than a little surprised. Shocked maybe would be a better way to describe it. I usually know who the villain is before I get to the end. What a plot twist. I loved it. It was definitely something I never saw coming.

This book has it all Blackmail, violence, betrayal, and finally murder. I think Harry St. John did an amazing job on this book. There are still people out there that I think Jack Miller needs to track down and take care of. I'm sure there is another book in this series coming later. I don't think Harry St. John will leave us hanging.

First-time Kiwi crime writer St John, who has written in other genres under another name, explodes onto the scene with this dark and thrilling young adult tale. Jack “Spade” Miller is a wayward teenager left looking for answers when his ex-girlfriend Ella Lewis is found dead.

While others lay some of the blame for the apparent suicide on Spade, he can’t believe Ella would kill herself, and sets out to find the truth. A dangerous quest that scratches at the veneer of stable suburbia and takes him deep into the Auckland underworld, where nefarious deeds are committed behind closed doors.

St John isn’t scared to take readers into some pretty dark and nasty places in this terrific debut; although it’s tabbed as a young adult read, with a teenaged ‘hero’, there are some very adult themes. Spade is a compelling centerpiece in a fearlessly told tale packed with intriguing characters. A new voice well worth listening to.

This had promise. Great cover, enticing blurb, good storyline, but a tad superficial in execution. Well-written but lacked real depth. I didn't engage with the main character at all.
A taut expedition into the depths of human depravity, Leave Her Hanging is like a shot in the arm for someone who's afraid of needles. The grim reality of the story is made even more haunting by the youth of its narrator. Harry St. John knows how to tell a dark one, almost too well. A great piece for a modern fan of the noir genre, or anyone looking to feel a little depressed.
