After more than three thousand years of inadvertent exile on Kalal, a group, chosen from amongst the descendants of the Brotherhood of Prophets, embark on the perilous journey back to the Old World. Having almost covered the vast distance without mishap, the designated Inbound Crew are woken three weeks early. The sudden appearance of what the Ark of the Covenant's AI terms the Veil, presents her and them with an insoluble problem.
Passage through the enigmatic, intangible shroud that has been thrown around their target system leaves the Ark helpless, without power or computer guidance, yet still heading at mad speed for the distant sun. As Eddie Aldin and the three other Inbound Crew members engage in the life-or-death struggle to regain control of the vessel they come to realise that the planetary system they are entering is no longer the one belonging to the Old World. They have been translocated into a parallel universe. Despite this shattering comprehension, they manage to place the Ark of the Covenant in orbit around the planet Pinchbeck and make landfall on the congenial, but uninhabited world. And there, it seems they have marooned themselves.
None of the children of the Ark, however, are aware that they were being pursued by a follow-up mission; the enormous and enormously fast interstellar vessel, Dis, bearing tens of thousands of Yokannists, intent on reaching the Old World first, to spread their heretical doctrine. Yet something awful happens to those aboard Dis, a form of satanic possession, which leaves many dead and most of the survivors deranged. Before the small number of people who have retained their sanity can take any coordinated action, Dis itself runs into the Veil. In this instance, the Veil and the power-source of Dis, a captive singularity, undergo mutual annihilation; a transdimensional event which leaves Dis relatively unscathed but which jolts the now colonists of Pinchbeck back to the site of their original target, the Old World.
Eddie Aldin and the others from the Ark find themselves on a raddled, polluted and dangerous Earth, from which humankind has disappeared. It seems like one of the old local prophecies come true, and with the shattered madhouse of Dis limping to take up station in orbit near the Moon, the new arrivals await the fulfilment of Revelation.
